What is aircraft tail assignment?

Aircraft tail assignment means assigning a specific registered aircraft—not just a fleet type—to each flight or activity. The resulting sequence determines where the aircraft goes, when it is available, and whether it can complete its next task.

Each aircraft must start its next activity where the previous one ended. The schedule must also account for differences in availability and service periods, rather than treating every aircraft in a fleet as identical.

Constraints that shape a feasible rotation

Turnaround time

A connection must leave enough time between arrival and the next activity. Minimum turnaround rules prevent sequences that look connected in data but cannot be operated on the ground.

Station continuity

An aircraft must begin its next activity where the previous one ended. Continuity rules keep the rotation connected across the planning period.

Compatibility and availability

Fleet and aircraft compatibility determine whether a tail can perform a particular activity. Availability windows and service periods determine whether it can do so at the required time.
